Economic data and country background information

Example: I want GDP data for South Africa that includes economic forecasts.

  • Type South AfricaGDP into the box and click search
  • Select "GDP in South Africa" under the heading ECONOMIES AND CONSUMERS ANNUAL DATA
  • Go to Convert Data and change the currency to USD (y-o-y ex rates)
  • You can change the date range to get forecasted data (click Apply after selecting the years)
  • You can search for other economic indicators like inflation or disposable income. You can also you the "Convert Data" feature to access the economic indicators on a per capita basis.
  • Also search for inflation data ,government expenditures and Population Living Below International Poverty Line ($3.10 a Day) in South Africa

Example: I'm looking for a PEST (political, economic, social and technological) for South Africa.

  • Type pest South Africa into the box and select PEST Analysis: South Africa

Example: I'm looking for information on the business climate of South Africa.

  • Type business dynamics South Africa and select Business Dynamics: South Africa

Example: I'm looking for data on topics like internet access, health care expenditures and net national income per capita

  • Go to "Country" and select South Africa
  • Go to "Series" and select (as examples), Current health expenditure per capita (current US$), Adjusted net national income per capita (current US$), Fixed broadband subscriptions (per 100 people), Mobile cellular subscriptions (per 100 people) and Individuals using the Internet (% of population)
  • Go to "Time" and select 2016-2020
  • Click Apply changes
  • These indicators were only examples, and it's likely that are additional data points that will be helpful

Example: I need a country report for South Africa.

  • Type South Africa into the search box and change Select a Field to GE Geographic Terms with the pull-down menu
  • Click search
  • On the left-hand side, click the box for Country Reports

Statista primarily provides economic and demographic statistics on Haiti.

The Haiti 2021 Statista Country Report is an example of the type of content available from Statista.

Industry reports

Example: I want industry reports that cover telecommunications and healthcare.

Here are some examples of reports that might be helpful

  • Global Wireless Telecommunications Carriers
  • Global Internet Service Providers
  • Hospitals in the US (use this report for information about how to analyze the hospitals industry)

Example: I need an industry report for telecommunications services. in South Africa:

  • Type South Africa into the first box
  • Type marketline into the second box
  • Type telecommunications into the third box
  • Click Search
  • Select the report "MarketLine Industry Profile: Wireless Telecommunication Services in South Africa"
  • Examples of other reports include "MarketLine Industry Profile: Banks in South Africa," "MarketLine Industry Profile: Mobile Phones in South Africa," "MarketLine Industry Profile: Real Estate in South Africa," "MarketLine Industry Profile: Travel & Tourism in South Africa" and "MarketLine Industry Profile: Healthcare Providers in South Africa."

Example: I'm looking for a report on credit cards in South Africa.

  • Type South Africa financial and select either Financial Cards and Payments in South Africa
  • Please note: Passport covers consumer products and services really well, but doesn't address industries like telecommunications, real estate, healthcare, etc.

Example: I'm looking for the telecommunications industry in South Africa.

  • Type South Africa telecommunications into the box and click search
  •  

Companies in South Africa

Example: I need to locate companies in South Afruca

  • Scroll down and click the link for "Business"
  • Click "Find a Company" to search for a specific company
  • Click "Create a Company List" for a list of several companies
    • Scroll down to "Regions/Countries" and click Edit
    • Click the box for South Africa and click OK
    • Go to SIC code lookup to narrow down your search to a specific industry such as textiles and click OK
    • Optional: set revenue ranges
    • Click "Create"
    • Download records as PDFs. In many cases the downloaded records will include information that will otherwise be unavailable.

Example: I need financial information on the South African company Vodacom Group.

  • Type vodacom into the box and select Vodacom Group Proprietary
  • Click the tab for "Financials"
  • You can use the pulldown menu to change the currency to US Dollars
  • All public South Afrtican companies should appear in Mergent Online (and S&P Net Advantage)

Example: I want a list of public South African companies involved in Finance and Banking.

  • Remove the checkmarks at the top for every category except I"nternational Company Database (Active)"
  • Click Advanced Search
  • Click Country of Operation and select South Africa
  • Click Industry Codes and select Primary NAICS
  • Click Use NAICS code lookup and identify 52 as the beginning code for these industries
  • Click View to obtain a list of companies

 

Articles

Example: I'm looking for articles on economic development in Haiti.

  • Click the box for "Select All" and then click Continue
  • Type Haiti into the first search box
  • Type economic development into the second box and click search
  • Go to Publication Date on the left-hand side to filter results to a specific date range (e.g. 2012-2022)

Example: I'm looking for articles on healthcare in Haiti.

  • Click the box for "Select All" and then click Continue
  • Type Haiti into the first search box
  • Type healthcare or health care or health services or hospitals or medical care into the second box and change the field to SU Subject terms with the pull-down menu
  • Click Search
  • Go to Publication Date on the left-hand side to filter results to a specific date range (e.g. 2016-2022)
