Example: I need balance sheet, income statement and cash flow statement data for Tesla.

  • Type either Tesla or the the ticker symbol (TSLA) into the search box and select Tesla, Inc. (NasdaqGS:TSLA)
  • On the left-hand side, scroll to the Financials/Valuation section and select either income statement, balance sheet or cash flow statement
  • Data can be downloaded into Excel

Example: I need ratio data for Tesla.

  • Type either Tesla or the the ticker symbol (TSLA) into the search box and select Tesla, Inc. (NasdaqGS:TSLA)
  • On the left-hand side, scroll to the Financials/Valuation section and select "Ratios"

Example: I need SEC Filings for Tesla.

  • Type either Tesla or the the ticker symbol (TSLA) into the search box and select Tesla, Inc. (NasdaqGS:TSLA)
  • Scroll down the left-hand side of the screen and click the link for SEC Filings
  • Select the latest 10-K file. You can consult the 10-Q's for more updated information
  • The "Risk Factors" section will be useful for your SWOT analysis
  • Search the document for terms such as competition, suppliers, segment, etc.

Example: I need a Stock Report for Netflix.

  • Type either Netflix or the ticker NFLX into the box at the top of the screen
  • Scroll down the left-hand side of the screen until you reach the heading for research
  • Click the link on the left for Stock Reports
  • Click the link for Equity Research
  • Click the PDF icon for the report

Example: I need financial ratios for Penske Automotive,

  • Type Penske or the ticker PAG
  • On the left-hand side of the screen, click the link for "Ratios"

Example: I need a list of pharmaceutical/biotechnology/life sciences companies with a profit margin greater than 15%..

  • Click the link for Screening at the top of the screen and choose Equities Screening
  • Click the link for Industry Classification
  • Click the plus sign + for Healthcare
  • Click the box for Pharmaceuticals, Biotechnology and Life Sciences
  • Click "Add Criteria"
  • Click the link for Financial Statements
  • Click the plus sign + for Compustat Operating Metrics and Ratios
  • Click the plus sign+ for Profitability & Margins
  • Click Net Income Margin
  • Type 15 into the "Greater than"box
  • Click Add Criteria
  • Go to "Security Features" and select "Active"
  • Click the Excel Icon in the upper left-hand side to download the data into Excel

Mergent Online

Use this database to access financial data, ratios and company comparisons. You can download the data into Excel.

Example: I need the income statement, balance sheet, cash flow statement and ratios for Boeing for the past few years.

  • Type Boeing (or the ticker symbol BA) into the search box and then select Boeing
  • Click the tab for Company Financials
  • Use the pull-down menu to select the type of financial data (balance sheet, income statment or cash flow)
  • Use the pull-down menu to select the years of coverage
  • If you have a foreign company, you can select US Dollars for the currency
  • Click Refresh
  • Click the link for Ratios
  • Choose the years you need and click Refresh

To see how ratios were calculated, click the arrow:

Example: I want a technical analysis report for Boeing.

  • Type boeing (or the ticker symbol BA) into the search box and then select Boeing
  • Click the tab for Company Reports
  • Select the "Fundamental Report"

Example: I want to compare Tesla Motors financials with other automobile manufacturers.

  • Type tesla motors into the search box and click search
  • Click the tab for Competitors at the top of the screen
  • Remove any companies that you don't want in the list
  • Add companies that you need
  • Click the link for "Click here to create a competitor report"
  • Click the link for Company Comparison Report
  • Select your companies by clicking >>
  • Click the plus signs + for Financials and Ratios
  • Click the types of financials and ratios that you need
  • Click > to add the financials and ratios
  • Click the box for Include Average
  • Select the years you want
  • Use the pull-down menu to select Microsoft Excel format
  • Click Create Report

Example: I want a list of publicly-traded automobile manufacturing companies in China

  • Click the circle for Primary NAICS
  • Type 3361 (the code for automobile manufacturing into the box. You can use the code lookup to browse specific categories.
  • Select China with the pull-down menu
  • Search
