All Things Circ. – Payson Library

A collection of policies, procedures and general information for Payson Library's Circulation Department.

Policies for Patrons

The Library has lots of policies for patrons here are some semi-common questions that may stump you while working at the desk. For a full list of policies see the website.

Filming in the Library

Pepperdine faculty, staff and students need to ask permission from the Library Dean's office if they want to film in the library. They are not allowed to film in the library without getting permission first. Here is the information.

"Can I Leave This Here?"

The library does not hold personal items behind the Circulation Desk for Patrons, by holding an item, such as a Laptop, purse or package, the library is assuming responsibility for the item.  The Circ. staff doesn't have the capacity to watch other people's valuable items and we can't be responsible for lost items. This means the library does not, for any reason, hold items for Patrons to pick up later, does not hold items for someone the Patron knows to pick up later or hold an item so a Patron can “grab some food.”  Exceptions are handled by supervisors.
Students may personally hold items for their friends, but they must take the items with them at the end of their shift.  If they do not, the item will be considered lost and placed in the Lost and Found.

When Someone Beeps (Security Gates)

An important part of the job is monitoring the exits. Security gates will alarm (beep) when materials aren't desensitized. (If an item has not been checked out properly and/or you have forgotten to desensitize the item will trigger the alarm. Additionally,  the security strips used by the Bookstore or other libraries may also trigger the security gate.)

  • When the alarm is triggered you should politely ask the patron to return to the Circulation Desk.
    • Ask if he/she HAS a Payson Library material: Check it out to the patron again and desensitize it again. Apologize for the inconvenience.
    • If the patron does NOT have Payson Library material: Ask if he/she has any materials from another library, bookstore and offer to desensitize.
Lost and Found

1) If an item is over $100 in value (phone, wallet, credit card, etc.) please call Public Safety so they can come to pick it up. DO NOT CALL THE STUDENT OR EMAIL THEM - things can get lost behind the circ desk and we do not want to be responsible.

2) Student ID - Any student ID will be sent to One Stop. Please place the ID's in the cardholder in the circ closet until they are sent to One Stop. PLEASE DO NOT CALL THE STUDENT OR EMAIL THEM - things can get lost behind the circ desk and we do not want to be responsible.

3) If an item is less than $100 then please place it in one of the lost and found boxes and enter the item in the lost and found log.

At the end of a Semester lost and found boxes are emptied and given to Goodwill.

Missing Disc

Missing Disc

If a DVD or CD is returned without a disc or a disc is returned without a DVD then filled out a DVD Action Slip. Do not, under any circumstance, check the item in.  This will be done once the situation is resolved.

What to do when Professors ask to barrow reserve items they did NOT place on Reserve

Loaning reserve items (DVD’s) to the professors who did not place the item on reserve is Not Permitted

Policy: The Instructor must receive permission from the professor who placed the item on hold to take reserve DVD’s out of the library.

Extreme SituationsIf the instructor does not have permission and can’t wait for permission, for example, they need the DVD for a night class starting soon, then, using discretion, a librarian or student worker can loan a DVD for a class period unless the item is in high demand.

However, the professor can NOT take the item for days at times (example, over the weekend):

Options: The Instructor can

·         ask the library to order another copy

·         ask Sally if it possible to have a streaming version

·         See if Amazon has a streaming version to rent or buy?

·         Wait for the professor’s permission and designate a student to pick-up the DVD if circumstances prevent them from picking it up before class.

(Reasoning: the item needs to be available for the professor who placed it on reserve. If he or she has required their class to watch the DVD before class or for a midterm and their students can’t watch the DVD because another professor has it, then the library failed the professor with the forethought to place the item on hold.)
