Common Elements of a Literature Review

While there are differences in literature reviews depending on the discipline, most literature reviews:

  • summarize, analyze and organize sources tied to an overarching theme
  • use a set of defined criteria for selecting the sources to review
  • provide an explanation for differing conclusions between sources on similar questions
