Chronicling America contains millions of newspaper pages from nearly every state and territory in the United States published through 1963. New newspaper pages are added to Chronicling America on a regular basis.

This guide provides an overview of Chronicling America, a searchable digital collection of historic newspapers 1770-1963.

Established in 1851 as a weekly newspaper, it was printed half in Spanish and half English until 1855. When the Civil War broke out, the outspoken criticism of the federal government by its editor led to the Star being banned from the mails, and the arrest of its editor for treason. It ceased publication in 1864, apparently due to financial problems, but resumed in 1868. In 1870 it became a daily, but ceased publication in 1879 because of lack of funds. No complete file is known to exist. The current collection consists of about 500 issues up through 1864.

The Historic Mexican and Mexican American Press collection documents and showcases historic Mexican and Mexican American publications published in Tucson, El Paso, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Sonora, Mexico from the mid-1800s to the 1970s. The collection covers important periods in Mexican-American history, from the Mexican Revolution to the Bracero Program to the Chicano Movement.

Its writers discussed “literature, science, and art” according to its own motto.

La Gaceta is the oldest continuously published paper from Ybor City, a neighborhood in Tampa, Florida. The Manteiga family has published the paper without interruption since 1922.
