Teaching with Special Collections and Archives

Best practices for requesting materials and planning for instruction sessions in Special Collections and Archives

Welcome

Thank you for your interest in scheduling an instruction session with Special Collections and Archives! We look forward to supporting your students' research and learning goals.

Instruction in special collections is an opportunity to introduce students to historic primary source research and the intellectual, affective, and communal value of cultural heritage.

Please email alicia.petersen@pepperdine.edu to schedule your class' visit to Special Collections.

Requests

Headway
  • Our instructional capacity is limited, so we appreciate early instruction requests and alternate days.
Contribution
  • We request a consultation session ahead of your visit to review possible materials, plan activities, and discuss goals for your class visit.
  • You are welcome to review the library catalog and present an initial list of potential materials. The Special Collections Librarian will also recommend objects that align with your pedagogical goals.
  • To ensure learning goals are met, we request your presence in the instruction session and your active participation.
