The First Generation Student Experience by 
A trailblazer is a pioneer, someone who is willing to take risks and forge a new path. Are you the trailblazer in your family and the first to attend a four year university? First year trailblazers, commonly referred to as “first-generation college students,” will have an opportunity to connect with other first-generation students who will be first in their family to earn a bachelor’s degree. This first year seminar aims to build community and friendships among the trailblazers. Together we will learn about Pepperdine’s resources and services available to all students, prepare for internship applications, and discover how to prioritize our health and wellness as trailblazers transition into their new home at Pepperdine. Some questions we will explore include: How do you define the identity of a trailblazer? What does it mean for you and your family to be the first to attend a university? What do you envision college to be like? What celebrations and challenges do you anticipate? This semester-long course introduces the first-year student to both the college experience and to community connection and outreach centered around the first-generation college student experience.
