BA 442: Financial Markets and Institutions (Baim): Corporate Bond Yields, Ratios and Company Research

This guide will help with your research.

S&P Net Advantage

Example: I'm looking for corporate bond yields for General Motors.

  • Search for General Motors and select General Motors Company (NYSE:GM)
  • On the left-hand side scroll down to "Fixed Income" and select "Securities Summary"
  • Sort by Maturity date so you can analyze securities that haven't matured yet
  • Look at the column for YTW that accounts for the current price of the bond

Example: I need information on the amount of total debt that General Motors has.

  • Search for General Motors and select General Motors Company (NYSE:GM)
  • On the left-hand side, scroll down to Financials and select Balance Sheet
  • Look through the liabilities section for the heading
  • You will have to add several lines to obtain the total debt:
    • Current Portion of Leases
    • Long Term Debt
    • Long-Term Leases
    • Finance Division Debt Current
    • Finance Division Debt Non Current

Example: I need debt ratios for General Motors.

  • Search for General Motors and select General Motors Company (NYSE:GM)
  • On the left-hand side, scroll down to Financials and select Ratios
  • Scroll down to the section for Long-term Solvency to locate ratios such as "Total Debt/EBITDA"
    • Click the ratio (the actual number) to see how it was calculated

Example: I need a stock report on Home Depot.

  • Type home depot into the search box at the top of the screen and select Home Dept, Inc. (NYSE:HD)
  • On the left-hand side of the screen, go to the section for Research and click Equity Research
  • Click the PDF icon to access the report

Example: I want an industry report that is relevant to Home Depot.

  • Type home depot into the search box at the top of the screen and select Home Dept, Inc. (NYSE:HD)
  • Go to the left-hand side of the screen and go to the section for "My Links" and then select Industry Surveys
  • Go to the "Specialty Retail" heading and click the PDF icon

This is a great resource for investment reports that analyze your company's financial performance and provide forecasts.

Example: I need investment reports on Facebook.

  • Click the link for Research at the top of the screen
  • Click the link for Advanced Research
  • Type facebook into the search box
  • Type 10 in the Show Page(s) box
  • Click Search
  • Click the link for a report that interests you
  • In the new window that displays, click the box for Select All Reports and click View
  • When you are finished, click Log-out in the upper-right hand corner of the screen. This will free-up passwords for other Pepperdine users.
