Welcome to the Pepperdine University Libraries Government Information Research guide.

Use this guide to help discover resources available from the United States Government.

Pepperdine students, faculty, staff and members of general public may use all government-provided information.

A large majority of government documents are now freely available online. Please refer to the Gov Info web portal or the Databases and Resources section of this InfoGuide for more information.

Please note that requests for physical materials are by appointment only. To schedule, please contact Marc Vinyard, AUL for Graduate Campus Libraries. Most of our government documents are stored off-site. The Government Information Center Hours conform to those of Payson Library. 

"Since 1813, select U.S. Government documents have been made available throughout the United States and its territories to designated libraries. These designated libraries are called Federal depository libraries.

As members of the FDLP, depository libraries play a prominent role in providing Federal Government information to the public. FDLP libraries collaborate on a local and national level to provide informed access to both historical and current Federal Government resources distributed through the FDLP and deposited in libraries across the country.

Anyone can visit Federal depository libraries and use the Federal depository collections which are filled with information on careers, business opportunities, consumer information, health and nutrition, legal and regulatory information, demographics, and numerous other subjects.

The authority for the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) and the legal obligations of designated Federal depository libraries are found in 44 United States Code §§1901‐1916."  - FDLP.gov

Pepperdine University is a selective depository of Federal government publications. Print and microfiche copies of select government documents are housed at Payson Library. Many government publications are available electronically.

Census Bureau

• The 2020 Census counted every person living in the United States and the five U.S. territories. It marked the 24th census in U.S. history and the first time that households were invited to respond to the census online.
• The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) released the 1950 Census population records on April 1, 2022. This release is in accordance with the “72-Year Rule” (92 Stat. 915; Public Law 95-416; October 5, 1978) that states that after 72 years, NARA is responsible for releasing to the public decennial census records.
