In-Text Citation Quick Reference

Example 1: Vandenberg and Smith (2002) reported that “the current state of the treatment for processing deficits in american public schools is similar to the state of the treatment of processing deficits in Finland from several decades ago” (p. 600).

Ex 2: Currently,  the  method used in American public schools to treat processing deficits is similar to the treatments used in Finland several decades ago (Vandenberg & Smith, 2002, p.600).

1 Author: use the Authors last name the date of publication.

(Vandenberg, 2008, p.12)

 2 Authors: name both authors every time. Use an ‘&’ between the names

(Wegener & Petty, 1998, p.84)

Note: use the word “and” between the authors name when mentioning them within the text. Research by Wegener and Petty (1998) supports...

 3-5 Authors: list all the author’s last names the 1st time you cite the source. Use the ‘&.’

(Kernis, Cornell, Sun, Berry, & Harlow, 1993, p.764 )

In subsequent citation use the first author last name then “et al.” and the date of publication.
(Kernis et al., 1993, p.12)

6 or more Authors: Use only the first author’s last name and “et al.”

Use the first author's name followed by “et al.” in the signal phrase or in parentheses.

(Harris et al., 2001, p.3)

Note: in text use the first author’s last name followed by “et al.” and the date of publication in parentheses:  Harris et al. (2001) argued...

No page number! Use the paragraph numbers by using the abbreviation "para." (McLee, 1999, para. 6 ).

APA Style describes rules for the preparation of manuscripts for writers and students in:

TYPES of APA Papers:

       There are two common types of papers that have unique requirements concerning the sections that must be included in the paper. 

This guide will show examples of the General Format used for the other types of papers that do not fall into those two categories.

Using the Giude:

  • Examples are usually highlighted in red.
  • Some sentences use Lorem ipsum or dummy text.

Paper Formatting Guidelines

Is there a Cover Page- Is the Running head/ Page Header typed in ALL CAPS- How do I format long quotes etc?

A literature review formatting typically includes:

Title page
Introduction section

An experimental report formatting typically includes:

 General Formatting- Quick Reference:

Font- 10- 12pt. font in Times New Roman

Title Page: (How Do I Do That Video)

  • Page header/running head- short version of title, placed flush up against the upper left hand corner of the paper and in uppercase.

Cover page- Running head: TITLE OF THE PAPER and the page number.

Other pages-TITLE OF THE PAPER

  • Title - is one to two lines and no longer than 12 words. Name: First name, middle initial(s), and last name (do not use titles like Dr. or degrees like PhD.  lastly the name of the University.

Abstract- on a new page center the word “Abstract (no italics, underlines or bolds).

You may also want to list keywords from your paper in your abstract. Indent as if your where starting a new paragraph, type Keywords: (italicized), and then list your keywords.

Keywords:  againg, attention, information processing

References- List cited sources on the final page. Alphabetize list by first Author's last name. (How Do I Do That Video)

Then alphabetize letter by letter. Note: that "'nothing presedes something' so Brown, J. R., precedes Browning, A. R., even though "i" come before "j" in the alphabet." Order several works by the same author by the earliest publication date. 

Book 

Author's Last Name, A.A. (year) Book Title. Locatin: Publisher. 

Electronic Version of a Print Book 

Author's Last Name, A.A. (year) Book Title. Locatin: Publisher. Retrieved from htt://www.xxxxxx

Periodicals (journals, magazines, newspapers, and newsletters): Name: Last name, followed by inishals.

Author Last Name, A.A, Last name B. B., Last name C.C. (year). Title of article. Title of Periodical, page #, DIO (if provided) 

Online Periodicals 

Author Last Name, A.A, Last name B. B., Last name C.C. (year). Title of article. Title of Periodical, Advance online publication. DIO (if provided) 

News Article 

Last name, A. (year, month, day). Title. NewsPaperName.  page #   (note: lise all the page numbers the article apears on like pp. B1, B3B7).

Online News Article 

Last name, A. (year, month, day). Title. NewsPaperName. Retrieved from http://www.xxxxxx

Page # - place in upper righthand corner

Long Quotes: Indent 1/2 inch from the left margin. Double-space the quotation. Do not use quotation marks around a quotation that has been set off from the text. Example
