MLA Style

MLA style for documentation is widely used in the humanities, especially in writing on language and literature.

Generally simpler and more concise than other styles, MLA style uses in-text parenthetical citations and the list of resource appear in alphabetical order in a "works cited" page that appears at the end of the work.

Using the Giude:

  • Examples are usually highlighted in red.
  • Some sentences use Lorem ipsum or dummy text.
  • When this "(How Do I Do That Video) " appears by an example then an accompanying demonstration video is available in the "How Do I DO That?" box on this page.

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetuer adipiscing elit (Name, page #). Sed eleifend nonummy diam. Praesent mauris ante, elementum et, bibendum at, posuere sit amet, nibh (Jones, 14). Duis tincidunt lectus quis dui viverra

When you site more than one work in a paragraph you can have more than one work referenced in your Parenthetical citation: (Fukuyama 42; McRae 101-33).

For more specific examples of how to write in text citation when you’re citing different works by the same author; works by more than one author, works with no authors, and authors with the same name etc. refer to the MLA Handbook.

Full name provided last name, first name. Title in Italics with Every Important Word is Capitalized. Publisher’s name are abbreviated, date of publication. Medium.

Research Paper Formatting Guidelines

Do MLA papers have a Cover Page- How do I number pages- How do I enter quotes longer than 4 lines etc?

Formatting Guidelines- tell users how to format the paper.

Example of Paper Formatted using MLA 7th Ed.

 Formatting- Quick Reference:

  • Font- easy to read 12pt. font
  • Title Page - There is No Title Page. Instead 1in from the top of the page type your name, instructor's name, course number, and date separated by double spaces. see example below:

Jenny Jones

Professor Smith

Art 100

16 April  2013

  • Header& Page # - in top right-hand corner of every page place last name and page number. Example: Jones 1
(How Do I Do That Video)
  • Titles-

When citing a title use the title from the Title Page -NOT the book's cover!

Titles should not be italicized UNLESS it is the title of a scripture writing.

CAPITALIZE the First word, Last word, Words after colons, and Principle words in the title.  Do not capitalize the following parts of speech if they fall in the middle of the title- Articles (as, the...), Prepositions (against, between, in...), Coordinating conjunctions (and, but, for...) or "to."

  • Quotes- are exact replicas of text; any changes must be clearly identified with [brackets] or italics.

Quotes longer than 4 lines? - create a block quote by indent one inch (two "tab" keys). Then enter the quote double spaced without quotations and with a citation. Example

Quotes & Punctuation? - Finish the quote, add the citation then the punctuation.

Example: ...the end" (Smith and Cruz, 88).

Quoting a Quote?- Whenever possible quote the original source but when the statement you want to "quote or paraphrase is itself a quotation, put the abbreviation qtd in ("quoted in") before the indirect source you cited in your parenthetical reference."

Example:  Suspendisse vulputate aliquam dui "Nulla elementum dui ut augue" (qtd. in Smith, 177).

  • Punctuation- the punctuation follows the citation. Example: (14).
  • Work Cited- appears at the end of the paper and is double spaced.

Center "Work Cited" at the top of the page then list source in alphabetic order by author's last name.
The second line of source information is indent 1/2 Inch (1 Tab). Example  &
(How Do I Do That Video)

Citation Machines/Generators

EasyBib creates citations. Enter the information (aka ISBN, URL...) for the Book, Journal etc. If EasyBid doesn't locate the material it will provide a template. Finish supplying the information for each field in the template to generate a citation. Note: ONLY MLA is free so this tool will not work for Chicago or APA citations without a subscription.

Other Machines:

BibMe

KnightCite

Pepperdine Catalog:

NOTE: it is good practice to double check citations provided with articles or generated by machines. Sometimes the citation machine will not italicize things that should be italicized or it puts things in ALL CAPS that shouldn’t be capitalized.
