Business Industry Guide: Theme Parks (as of Spring 2018): Industry Research

Doing research on the theme park industry? Use this guide to get started!

Porter's Five Forces

Example: I need a Porter's Five Forces for the banking industry (industry for Capital One).

  • Type United States into the first box
  • Type "five forces" into the second box and select TX All Text with the pull-down menu
  • Type capital one into the third box and select TX All Text with the pull-down menu
  • Click Search
  • The report titled "Banks Industry Profile: the United States" will contain a Porter's Five Forces analysis

Example: I need a Porter's Five Forces analysis for the credit card industry.

  • Type United States into the first box
  • Type credit cards into the second box
  • Type "five forces" into the second box and select TX All Text with the pull-down menu
  • Click Search
  • The report titled "Credit Cards in the United States." will contain a Porter's Five Forces analysis

TURN-OFF the pop-up blockers

This is a great resource for investment reports that analyze your company's financial performance and provide forecasts.

Example: I need investment reports for Six Flags.

  • Click the link for Research at the top of the screen
  • Click the link for Advanced Research
  • Type six flags into the search box
  • Select Six Flags Entertainment Corporation
  • Type 10 in the Show Page(s) box
  • Click Search
  • Click the link for a report that interests you (the report from Wells Fargo on 10/26/17 has a lot of useful data)
  • In the new window that displays, click the box for Select All Reports and click View
  • When you are finished, click Log-out in the upper-right hand corner of the screen. This will free-up passwords for other Pepperdine users.

Example: I want a Porter's Five Forces analysis relevant to Six Flags

  • Click the link for Research at the top of the screen
  • Click the link for Advanced Research
  • Select Last six months for the date
  • Scroll down to Enter Keyword(s)
  • Change Title to text with the pull-down meu
  • Type five forces and six flags
  • Click Search
  • The report titled "Leisure Attractions in the United State" will contain an industry level Porter's Five Forces analysis

Example: I want an industry report on theme/amusement parks.

  • Click the link for Research at the top of the screen
  • Click the link for Advanced Research
  • Select  Last 1 year for the date
  • Scroll down to Enter Keyword(s) and make sure that Title is selected and type amusement parks or theme parks into the search box
  • For report type, only have the box checked for Industry
  • Some reports will contain information that is helpful for a Porter's Five Forces analysis without explicitly using term such as "Threat of Substitutes" or "Threat of New Entrants."

Industry Overviews

This is a great resource for industry analysis and statistics.

Example: I need a report relevant to Six Flags.

  • Type six flagsinto the box and click Search
  • Select reports such as "Amusement Parks in the US"
  • Sections on competition and barriers to entry are relevant to Porter's Five Forces

Example: I want information on Lululemon's market share.

  • Type lululemon into the search box on the upper-right hand corner and click Go
  • On the left-hand column, click the link for Brand Shares

Example: I want an in-depth industry report relevant to Capital One (acquired ING Direct in 2012).

  • Type credit cards USA into the search box and click Go
  • Select the report titled "Credit Cards in the US"

An excellent source for detailed market research reports on consumer goods and services. These reports will provide market size, forecasts, market share

Example: I want market research reports relevant to Netflix or Lululemon.

  • On the opening screen you must agree to use the database only for academic purposes
  • Type netflix or Lululemon into the search box and click Search
  • The reports titled "Content Consumption: TV and Movies - US" and "Activewear - US" will be relevant

Web-based access to S&P Industry Surveys.

Example: I want an industry overview that is relevant to Six Flags

  • Type Six Flags or the ticker symbol (SIX)
  • At the left-hand column at the top of the screen, under the heading "My Links," click the link for "Industry Surveys"
  • Click the PDF for the report on "Hotels, Restaurants & Leisure"

Excellent resource for statistical data on electronic commerce and internet usage.

Example: I need data and reports on online banking.

  • Type banking into the box at the top and click Search
  • Several reports will provides statistics on online banking and forecasts
