Non-Pepperdine Users / Using Other Libraries

SCATLA – Jeremy Whitt (x4256) is in charge of this.

SCATLA is the Southern California American Theological Library Association. More information about the SCATLA borrowing program can be found here.

A list of SCATLA schools can be found here.

Who is eligible to use resources at partner institutions?

  • Only graduate students in the Religion Division and faculty members in the Religion Division
  • This service is not designed for students who simply want to visit a library that is more convenient
  • If you know the student is not in the religion program, please feel free to inform them that they are not eligible for this program, unfortunately.

For Pepperdine Students and Faculty:

  1. Ask the student whether they are an undergraduate or graduate student, and in which program they are enrolled. If they are not a graduate student in religion, inform them that they are not eligible for this program. If you have any questions about their status, you can call the religion division to verify that they are a current graduate student.
  2. If they are a graduate student in the religion program, request to see their student ID card.
  3. Log into WMS.
  4. In the circulation module, search for the student. If they are in the system, this means they are currently enrolled at Pepperdine and eligible. Check to see whether they have an excessive amount of overdue items, as this may disqualify them for a SCATLA card. If you have any questions or concerns, consult with the Head of Access Services.
  5. Discuss the student’s research needs and inform them that their use of the partner libraries is intended only for obtaining access to resources that are not available at Pepperdine.
  6. Ask them which institution they would like access to. Check the list of SCATLA institutions to verify that the institution is a SCATLA member: https://www.atla.com/Members/divisions/regional/SCATLA/Pages/Directory.aspx.
  7. Based on this discussion, If they fit the criteria for a SCATLA card, download and print on yellow paper a SCATLA card from here: https://www.atla.com/Members/divisions/regional/SCATLA/Documents/SCATLAcard2009.pdf.
  8. Fill out the information on the card.
  9. Make a copy of the card to keep on file for collecting statistics.
  10. Recommend to the student that they try to visit the host library during normal business hours. They will take the yellow SCATLA card to the host library, where the host library will exchange it for a library card and inform the student of their privileges, which vary from institution to institution.

Students and Faculty from Other Institutions
These individuals will come with a yellow SCATLA card that has been filled out by a partnering institution. They are eligible for a Pepperdine library card in the "other" category. These individuals should meet with the religion liaison or with the Head of Access Services, if possible. Otherwise, they can be added to WMS by anyone else with this capability.

  1. Request to see the student’s yellow SCATLA card from their home institution.
  2. If they do not have this card, request that they obtain one from their home institution and return.
  3. If they do have the card, check to make sure it is filled out properly and is current.
  4. Verify the name on the card with a photo ID, preferably the student/faculty ID from the home institution.
  5. Add them to WMS in the “other” category (see procedures on the circulation LibGuide or in the S Drive, or ask an access services librarian to help add them to WMS).
  6. Give them a Pepperdine University library card with a barcode.
  7. Inform them of their borrowing privileges (http://library.pepperdine.edu/about/policies/borrow.htm).
  8. Ask them whether they need assistance finding the resources they need. They may want to meet with the religion liaison.
  9. Give the yellow card to the religion liaison to file for collecting statistics.

Pepperdine faculty may obtain free library cards for use at UCLA Libraries by taking a valid driver's license (with photo) and a Pepperdine ID card to the circulation desk at one of the following UCLA Libraries: Arts, Louise M. Darling Biomedical, College, Hugh and Hazel Darling Law, Eugene and Maxine Rosenfeld Management, Music, Charles E. Young Research, and Science and Engineering (all locations) libraries.  You will be issued a library card that allows you to check out books. Card issuance hours may vary.

If our students want to check out Pepperdine Law Library materials they need to put a request through to ILL.

Camino items are rapid delivery items from other California libraries in the Camino SCELC group. The items have a shipped barcode that needs to be scanned in WMS and put on a Pepperdine patron record - just like scanning a Pepperdine barcode. The shipped camino barcode is right on the bookstrap on the front of the camino book.

When the camino item is returned, the camino shipped barcode needs to scanned in the check in part of WMS.

Then the Camino item needs to be placed in the camino bin on the hold shelf so Andrew can process it when he returns it to other libraries.

Sally, Cathie and Wil can help with Camino questions.
